Contractors — roofers, plumbers, electricians, landscapers, HVAC techs — need a different kind of website than a retail shop or a restaurant. A retail site has room to tell a story, show a lifestyle, and build a brand slowly. A contractor site doesn't have that luxury. By the time someone searches "emergency plumber near Scranton" or "roofer Pocono area," they are already in buying mode. They have a problem. They need a number. The job of the site is to hand them that number and give them one good reason to call yours first — not to scroll through a five-section homepage with a mission statement.

Three things every contractor site must have, and none of them are optional. First, a mobile-first layout — the majority of local service searches happen on a phone, often from a parking lot or a leaky basement, and if your site loads slow or the text is too small to read, the visitor is gone in under ten seconds. Second, a clear service area stated in plain text. Not just a map widget with a circle on it, but actual sentences: "We serve Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, the Poconos, and surrounding areas." Google reads that text and associates your business with those places; a map image does nothing for local search. Third, recent project photos with context. Three to five photos of actual jobs you've done, with a short caption explaining what the work was, is worth more than a stock photo gallery and a paragraph about your values.

What to actively avoid: overcomplicated menus that bury the phone number, slow image carousels that stall the page on mobile, and contact forms that ask for too much information before the visitor trusts you enough to give it. A six-field quote form on the first screen tells the visitor you don't respect their time yet. Start with a name and a phone number — you can get the rest on the follow-up call. The sites that convert local traffic into actual calls are almost always the simple ones: fast, clear service area, visible phone number, and a few photos of real work. The fancy sites with parallax scroll and animated counters look impressive in an agency portfolio and lose to the simple ones in the field every time.
